Tourism runs on first impressions

Tourism is described as a cornerstone of the economy in Northern Cyprus, with more than 1.3 million visitors staying in tourist accommodation in 2024 (Fair Observer). Travellers choose where to stay and eat from their phone, usually in a few seconds. Your website is the page they see after the map and the reviews. Here is how to make it work harder.

1. Make it fast on a phone

Most visitors are on a phone, often on mobile data. Compress photos, avoid heavy sliders and auto-playing video, and test the site on a normal connection. If a page takes more than a few seconds, people go back to the search results.

2. Put booking and contact within one tap

Add a clear "Book" or "Reserve" button at the top of every page, plus a click-to-call number and a WhatsApp button. In a destination where much of the business runs on WhatsApp, making it easy to message you is often the biggest single improvement.

3. Win direct bookings, not just platform bookings

Booking platforms bring guests, but they also charge commission. A website that clearly shows rooms, prices or availability, and offers a small direct-booking benefit such as a free breakfast, a late checkout or a better rate, helps you keep more of each booking.

4. Use your own photos

Real photos of your rooms, food, view and team build trust faster than stock images. Show the pool at the time of day guests will actually use it. Add a short description (alt text) to each image, which also helps search engines.

5. Write the menu and prices as text

A PDF menu is slow and hard to read on a phone, and search engines cannot use it well. Put the menu on a normal page with dishes, descriptions and prices. The same goes for room types and rates.

6. Speak your guests' languages

Guests arrive from Turkey, the UK, Europe and beyond. At minimum offer Turkish and English, with the switch always visible. See our guide to bilingual websites for how to do it properly.

7. Connect the website to Google

Your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your website should say the same thing: name, address, hours and phone. Embed the map, link your profile and add structured data for your business type. Our guide to getting found on Google Maps walks through the steps.

8. Show what is happening now

A short news or offers page, for example seasonal menus, festival weekends and winter rates, tells visitors you are open and active. Update it often and remove old offers.

A simple starting plan

  1. Test your site on your phone and fix anything slow or broken
  2. Add WhatsApp and call buttons
  3. Replace stock images with your own
  4. Turn PDF menus into text pages
  5. Check that Google shows the right hours and photos

If you would rather have it built for you, a website for a hotel, restaurant or villa is a good fit for our custom website package. Tell us about your property or venue.
